Pune University Adopts NEP: Four-Year Degree Courses and Curriculum Upgrade Await

Pune : Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) is on the verge of implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) with a brand-new syllabus set to be introduced to affiliated colleges in the upcoming academic year. The unveiling of this revamped curriculum is slated to occur in phases on the university’s website, with the official announcement expected after Diwali, post-November 15.

The implementation of the NEP at the degree level in affiliated colleges faced a one-year delay due to readiness challenges across the state. Consequently, commencing from the academic year 2024-25, colleges affiliated with the university will launch four-year degree programs in arts, commerce, and science. The state steering committee’s comprehensive plan, which was accepted by the university in July and received the approval of the Vidya Parishad in September, is now moving forward.

In alignment with this plan, educational institutions have meticulously developed the necessary syllabus for the inaugural year of the degree program. It will soon be accessible on the university’s official website, with provisions for subsequent adjustments based on valuable input from various stakeholders. Despite the delay, students can anticipate a fresh and innovative syllabus.

With just six months remaining before the commencement of the new academic year, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Dr. Parag Kalkar has outlined the roadmap for the future. He mentioned, “Training sessions for professors will be organized to ensure smooth integration of the new syllabus. Necessary funds have been allocated to facilitate the training of institutes. We will be receptive to suggestions and make requisite adjustments after the syllabus is made available on the website.”

The new grading system will be structured around a 60-40 formula, allocating 60% of the credits to core subjects and 40% to skill-based subjects in traditional courses. Colleges are now mandated to offer four-year degree programs that encompass skill development, value-based courses, and practical work experience. The university is actively working to enhance the range of optional subjects that fall within the 40-credit category.

Dr. Parag Kalkar reiterated key highlights of this transformative initiative:

  1. The upcoming academic year will witness the introduction of four-year degree programs.
  2. The four-year program and the syllabus for the first year are prepared and ready for implementation.
  3. Ongoing adjustments will be informed by faculty training and valuable suggestions over the next six months.
  4. Students will have the opportunity to pursue vocational training alongside traditional degree courses.
