Pune Traders Win Battle for Case Withdrawals, Seek Relief from Lockdown Violation Charges

In a significant turn of events, traders and shop owners in Pune, led by the former Mayor, have successfully lobbied for the withdrawal of lockdown violation cases filed against them during the Covid-19 pandemic. The push for relief gained momentum as traders protested the strict measures, resulting in charges related to inadequate social distancing and other norm violations.

Former Mayor Murlidhar Mohol spearheaded the appeal to the Commissioner of Police (CP) to dismiss the lockdown violation cases, emphasizing the economic challenges faced by businesses during the pandemic. Responding to the plea, State Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis has taken the decision to withdraw cases registered between March 21, 2021, and March 31, 2022. The Home Department is now tasked with the comprehensive review of all cases, ensuring appropriate actions are taken.

To streamline this process, a crucial meeting was convened with the active participation of Fatechand Ranka, President of the Federation of Traders Association Of Pune (FATP), Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, and Former Mayor Murlidhar Mohol. The responsibility of identifying eligible cases for withdrawal has been assigned to district-level committees, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police and the Deputy Divisional, ensuring a methodical and fair evaluation process.

This decision offers a glimmer of hope for the affected traders, providing them with relief from the legal repercussions of lockdown violations during a challenging period for businesses.
