Pune to Establish 16 Waste Transfer Centers in Pimpri for Efficient Waste Management

Pune: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is taking proactive measures to manage waste more efficiently by setting up 16 waste transfer centers at various locations in Pimpri. This initiative aims to scientifically transport accumulated waste from the city to the Moshi waste depot.

Yashwant Dange, Assistant Commissioner of the PCMC garbage department, shared insights, stating that the establishment of 16 waste transfer centers is in progress, with three centers already completed in Kasarwadi, Gawalimatha, and Kalewadi. These centers are being financed through funds from the Central Ministry. While there are land acquisition challenges for the remaining 13 centers due to opposition from some residents, the PCMC is committed to resolving these issues and establishing the centers promptly.

Each waste transfer center is designed to hold and manage up to 200 tonnes of waste. Currently, garbage collected from households is deposited in containers at 30 different health department centers. The waste is then transported to the waste depot using compactors, which poses several challenges. Employees have direct contact with the waste, leading to health concerns, and the areas become unhygienic. The odor and pollution also negatively impact the residents of nearby areas.

To address these issues, the central government has mandated the establishment of waste transfer centers. These centers will mechanize waste collection, reducing the need for direct employee involvement and minimizing pollution. With enclosed spaces, foul odors will be contained, creating a healthier environment for both workers and residents.

The PCMC has already completed the construction of three centers near the sewage treatment plant behind the Kasarwadi railway station, Bhosari, Gawalimatha in MIDC, and near the MM school in Kalewadi. The remaining 13 centers will be located in various zones including Sangvi, Pimple Gurav, Chinchwad, Khandoba Maal-Akurdi, Chovisawadi, Kiwale, Borhadewadi, and more.

Approximately Rs 7 crores will be invested per center, with Rs 4 crores allocated for machinery and around Rs 3 crores for construction works such as roads and walls. This initiative underscores PCMC’s commitment to improved waste management practices and creating a cleaner and healthier environment for its residents.
