Pune Sweats Through Warm Nights as Temperatures Rise, IMD Issues Weather Alert

Meteorological Department Warns of Increased Heat Levels and Possible Rainfall in Maharashtra

Pune residents are experiencing discomfort as nighttime temperatures soar amidst a significant spike in mercury levels, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue weather alerts for the region.

According to IMD data from Shivajinagar, Pune, nighttime temperatures surged to 23.4 degrees Celsius on March 29, marking a notable deviation of 6.1 degrees Celsius from the normal range. Areas such as Koregaon Park and Wadgaon Sheri witnessed temperatures hovering between 26 and 27 degrees Celsius, exacerbating discomfort for residents.

IMD Pune’s weather forecasting division attributed the rising temperatures to increased cloud cover since March 28, inhibiting the escape of longwave radiation and leading to warmer nights. Expressing concern over escalating maximum temperatures, meteorologists warned of heightened heat levels on Earth, reflecting broader climate trends.

A senior meteorologist at IMD Pune highlighted the influence of a low-pressure belt affecting weather patterns from north Tamil Nadu to southwest Madhya Pradesh, impacting Maharashtra’s weather. Vidarbha is expected to experience heatwave conditions within the next 24 hours, with Marathwada likely to witness light rain accompanied by thunderstorms in certain areas.

The weather forecast for Pune indicates partly cloudy skies for the next 72 hours with minimal fluctuations in minimum and maximum temperatures, according to Sonar. Pune city has been grappling with above-normal temperatures for approximately a week, with record highs observed on March 27 and March 29. Across the district, temperatures ranged between 34.3 and 41.1 degrees Celsius.

Akola recorded the state’s highest temperature at 42.6 degrees Celsius, while Mahabaleshwar registered the lowest at 21.4 degrees Celsius. Notably, nighttime temperatures in several districts remained six degrees Celsius above normal, prompting a yellow alert—indicating the likelihood of light rainfall—for various regions, including Pune, issued by the IMD.
