Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU)

PUNE: A proposal that Marathi should be made a compulsory subject in all courses offered by the university to help it to become a language of education, business and employment, was passed by Savitribai Phule Pune University’s (SPPU) Marathi Study Centre. SPPU is the first university in the state to pass such a resolution.

A meeting of the study centre was held under the chairmanship of Dr Sandip Sangle. In the last few years, the mother tongue is being neglected in educational and social life. Hence, it was decided that Marathi should be taught to all students of different branches in all colleges to preserve Marathi and increase its reach. If Marathi is taught at the university, it will help in making it a language of business, industry and knowledge. Later, a proposal about making Marathi compulsory was tabled in the meeting.

Dr Sandip Sangle, Chief of Marathi Study Centre, SPPU said, “The Marathi Study Centre is keen that Marathi literature and Marathi language should be made compulsory in all streams. The centre will have a correspondence with the state government regarding this. If education is provided in Marathi, it will help in making Marathi a language of employment.”
