Pune School Sparks Controversy by Expelling RTE Students Despite Offer to Pay Fees

In a contentious move, a school in Maharshinagar has come under scrutiny for expelling 40 students enrolled under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, despite their parents expressing willingness to pay the required fees for the upcoming academic year. The controversy highlights a violation of the RTE Act, which reserves 25% of seats in private schools for free education up to class VIII.

The school, responsible for the controversial decision, has asked students transitioning from class VIII to IX to leave, a move that has left the educational future of these students hanging in the balance. Despite the parents’ readiness to fulfill the financial obligations for Class IX, the school has remained unresponsive, causing growing concern among the affected families.

The issue escalated when the school sent letters to parents, notifying them that their children would be issued school leaving certificates alongside the annual examination results. The affected parents promptly approached the school, only to face an unyielding stance on the matter.

In response to the uproar, a social activist has intervened on behalf of the aggrieved parents, submitting a formal statement to education authorities and urging immediate action against the school for its attempt to force students out of the educational institution.

Expressing frustration, a parent shared, “Despite our willingness to pay the full school fees, the school maintains that there are no available seats for our children. My son has been a student at this school from class I to class VIII, but now admission for class IX is being denied.”

Assuring swift action, an education officer stated, “Every individual has the right to education as per the law. No school has the authority to expel students, especially after the payment of school fees. Our department will thoroughly investigate this incident, and appropriate action will be taken against the school.”
