Pune RTO Cracks Down on Vehicles with Out-of-State Registration, Targets Revenue Loss

The Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) is set to launch a crackdown on vehicles from other states that are operating within the city without updating their registration numbers. This initiative is in response to concerns that approximately 3% to 4% of the total vehicles in Pune fall into this category. Officials have noted that owners of such vehicles have neglected to change their registration numbers despite residing in the city for an extended period.

Addressing Revenue Loss and Compliance Challenges

The failure to update registration information has been identified as a contributing factor to revenue losses for the Pune RTO. To address this issue, a comprehensive drive to identify and rectify these cases is set to commence in early March. Sanjiv Bhor, the Pune Regional Transport Officer, acknowledged the challenge of determining precise figures on such vehicles but emphasized the necessity of taking action.

“Even if we identify and stop any such vehicle, it is difficult to prove that they have been operating in the state for more than a year. However, we will make every effort to do so,” stated Bhor.

Enforcement Strategy and Document Checks

The enforcement strategy involves ground teams conducting random checks on vehicles. Upon identification, these vehicles will be halted, and thorough document checks will be carried out. Drivers or owners will be interrogated to ascertain whether the vehicle recently arrived in Pune or has been in the city for more than a year.

Proactive Outreach and Compliance Emphasis

In anticipation of the initiative, RTO officials are urging individuals with registration numbers from other states to proactively reach out and update their information. They stress that the process is straightforward and can save them from incurring unnecessary fines and penalties. As Pune prepares to implement this drive, the RTO emphasizes the importance of compliance for a streamlined and legal vehicular operation within the city.
