Pune River Improvement Project Sparks Protest Amid Environmental Concerns

Pune : A river improvement project in Pune has ignited protests among citizens who are expressing concerns about environmental impacts and alleged irregularities in the project’s execution. The workshop held two days ago, under the guidance of Aditya Thackeray, aimed to discuss the river improvement project but has instead fueled discontent among environmentalists.

Nilesh Nikam and several other environmental enthusiasts staged a protest outside the municipal office, opposing the project’s execution without obtaining a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Environmental Department. The involvement of local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) councillors in the project has raised concerns about potential nepotism.

One of the main grievances is the lack of financial transparency, with project officials reportedly engaging in significant transactions without proper accountability. Despite multiple appeals, the government has not taken action to address these concerns, further fueling the discontent among citizens.

The outsourcing of extensive dredging of the riverbed to contractors has also come under scrutiny, prompting questions about the structural integrity of the entire project. In response to these issues, Nilesh Prakash Nikam has initiated a public protest, demanding a comprehensive structural audit and the formation of an oversight committee for the project.
