Pune Residents Rally Against Tree Removal in Koregaon Park: Signature Drive Gains Momentum

In response to the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) controversial proposal to remove trees in Koregaon Park, concerned residents and activists have initiated a signature campaign to voice their objections and advocate for the preservation of the city’s green cover.

Ameet Singh, a Core Member of Pune River Revival, expressed dismay over the PMC’s decision to proceed with tree felling despite prior objections. In an interview, Singh stated, “Previously, we had filed objections regarding this, still the PMC cut the trees in Koregaon Park. Hence, we have started this signature campaign in which we are aiming to get the maximum number of signatures from Punekars. We are going to submit all the signatures & voice our objections to the PMC till 15th January.”

The signature form, designed to raise objections and concerns about the tree felling in Koregaon Park, highlights the removal of over 80 old-growth trees at the junction of North Main Road. The rationale provided by PMC cites city development and the alleviation of traffic congestion. However, the residents express concerns about the impact on neighborhood density and increased traffic under the latest FSI laws.

The form suggests alternatives, such as a dedicated free left to Kalyaninagar, to address congestion issues without resorting to extensive tree removal. It also draws attention to the potential risk to significant old banyan trees near the upcoming reconstruction of St Miras Bridge, proposing alternatives like an elevated road from Yerawada Junction to RSI Chowk to protect valuable trees.

Koregaon Park, once known for its balance of nature, is now grappling with various environmental challenges, including traffic congestion, skyscrapers, untreated sewage, water scarcity, and a depleted groundwater table. The recent tree removals have intensified concerns among residents, prompting a plea to reconsider the approach to development.

The residents implore the PMC to prioritize the preservation of century-old trees and engage in transparent discussions on alternative plans that safeguard the environment. They emphasize the need for long-term vision and environmental preservation over short-term gains.
