Pune Researcher’s Deep Sea Pearl-Finding Robot Impresses PM Modi During US Visit

Pune witnessed a moment of pride as local researcher Kaustubh Sandeep Joshi’s revolutionary work on a deep sea pearl-finding robot garnered admiration during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the United States. The significance of Joshi’s research was brought into the spotlight during a special presentation at the National Science Foundation (NSF) in the presence of PM Modi and Jill Biden, the wife of US President Joe Biden. This prestigious event showcased the remarkable achievements of Joshi and his groundbreaking robot.

The Indian Embassy, aware of Joshi’s exceptional work, had reached out to him earlier, expressing their interest in his research project and PhD subject. This connection eventually led to his selection for this exclusive event, where he had the opportunity to interact with influential dignitaries.

Joshi’s robot, designed primarily for pearl-finding, boasts a range of potential applications, including oyster farming and aquaculture. The presentation took place at the NSF, where Joshi, alongside American student Nova, presented their respective research projects. PM Modi personally engaged with Joshi, recognizing the significance of his work and its potential for fostering collaborative efforts between India and the United States.

The American media also took notice of Joshi’s innovative research, emphasizing its value and the possibilities it opens up for bilateral cooperation between the two countries. Currently pursuing his PhD in Underwater Robotics at the University of Maryland, College Park in Washington DC, Joshi has an impressive academic background. He completed his B-Tech from IIT Chennai and received his schooling from Shamarao Kalmadi High School. Joshi’s deep sea pearl-finding robot addresses the inherent risks and high costs associated with traditional pearl diving methods. Capable of diving up to 150 meters, the robot incorporates cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning. It offers real-time monitoring through a dedicated app and possesses a battery life of approximately seven hours. In terms of efficiency, the robot can perform the work equivalent to that of around 100 fishermen. Its applications extend beyond pearl-finding, making it invaluable for endeavors like oyster farming and aquaculture.

Reflecting on his extraordinary experience, Joshi expressed immense gratitude for the opportunity to showcase his research in the presence of PM Modi. Although initially feeling the weight of the occasion, Joshi’s confidence soared as Modi arrived, allowing him to deliver his presentation with ease.
