Pune Railway Station Launches Pioneering ‘Free Legal Services and Mediation Clinic’

Pune has taken a significant step forward in addressing social issues and providing support to the economically weaker sections (EWS) with the inauguration of the pioneering ‘Free Legal Services and Mediation Clinic’ at the Pune railway station. This groundbreaking initiative, the first of its kind in the country, aims to offer legal aid and guidance to travelers passing through the station, setting a new standard for accessibility to legal services.

The Department of Labour, Central Warehousing Corporation, and representatives from the International Labour Organization joined forces under the guidance of the chief district and sessions judge and chairman of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) in Pune. Together, they organized a special seven-day campaign focused on rescuing and rehabilitating child laborers, highlighting the commitment of various entities to addressing this critical issue.

During the inauguration of the clinic, Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Sonal S Patil, emphasized the importance of similar initiatives in providing legal assistance to those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Patil stressed the significance of resolving disputes through peaceful means and highlighted the clinic’s primary objective of offering legal aid and guidance to individuals who may not know where to seek help.

In an interview with Mirror, Patil stated, “This initiative not only empowers those in need of legal assistance but also underscores the importance of peaceful dispute resolution.” The clinic at Pune station will be particularly beneficial for individuals accused under IPC section 379 (theft), as they will have access to free legal representation and bail support.

In addition to legal aid, the DLSA has established a mediation clinic at the station to address pre-litigation and post-litigation cases, providing immediate assistance to passengers in need of legal support. Furthermore, the DLSA plans to extend legal aid under Section 12 of the Legal Service Authority Act, 1997.

Patil emphasized the importance of raising public awareness about the newly established center and urged the Railway Authority to make announcements and inform passengers about the available services. Currently, the temporary clinic operates from the child helpline booth, but efforts are underway to secure a dedicated office space for its operations.

The provision of legal aid and support in such a prominent public space reflects the belief that justice and assistance should be accessible to all, regardless of their circumstances. The ‘Free Legal Services and Mediation Clinic’ at Pune railway station sets a commendable example of inclusivity and demonstrates Pune’s commitment to promoting social welfare and ensuring that legal support is within reach for everyone. This initiative is poised to make a significant impact on the lives of individuals in need, providing them with the necessary resources to seek justice and resolve disputes through peaceful means.
