Pune Prepares for Weekly Water Cuts in 2024 Amidst Concerns of Declining Reservoir Levels

In response to diminishing water levels in the city’s reservoirs post-monsoon, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is gearing up to implement a weekly one-day water cut starting from the new year. With concerns about the declining storage in dams compared to the previous year, the PMC aims to take preemptive measures to address the water scarcity issue.

The decision was made during a meeting of the Canal Advisory Committee, where the PMC allocated 16 billion cubic feet (TMC) of water despite extracting 1600 million Liters per day (MLD) from the dams. The Water Resources Department has raised concerns about this deviation from the committee’s decisions, prompting the PMC to assure the department of their cautious approach to water usage.

To address these concerns, the PMC has outlined specific strategies to conserve two TMC of water out of the total 16 TMC allocated for the Water Resources Department. This conservation effort will result in a one-day reduction in water supply every week.

Additionally, the PMC is actively involved in various initiatives, including the replacement of old water pipes, to minimize water distribution leakage and optimize water usage across the city.

Residents Adapt to the Change: As Pune residents prepare for the upcoming weekly water cuts, there is a growing awareness of the need to adopt water-saving habits. The community is urged to be mindful of their water usage to ensure sustainable water management in the city.
