Pune Police Imposes 40 KM Per Hour Speed Limit Between Katraj Tunnel and Navale Bridge to Curb Accidents on Mumbai-Bangalore National Highway

Pune, 18th July 2023: With the aim of reducing the number of accidents on the Mumbai-Bangalore National Highway, the Pune Police has taken a significant step by implementing a speed limit for heavy vehicles between Katraj Tunnel and Navale Bridge. Vijay Kumar Magar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic Branch, Pune, acting under the authority vested in him by the Government of Maharashtra, has issued the final speed limit orders for all heavy vehicles in the specified area.

Recognizing the importance of road safety, a maximum speed limit of 40 km/hour has been established for all heavy vehicles traveling within the designated stretch between Katraj Tunnel and Navale Bridge on the Mumbai-Bangalore National Highway. This speed limit has been enforced after taking into account the objections and suggestions received from various stakeholders, including experts and commuters.

The decision to impose a speed limit is a direct response to the increasing number of accidents that have occurred on this particular stretch, predominantly caused by overspeeding. By mandating a reduced speed limit, the authorities aim to mitigate the risks associated with high-speed heavy vehicle traffic, ensuring safer travel for all commuters on the Mumbai-Bangalore National Highway.

Statistics from the past nine years, spanning from 2014 to April 2023, reveal alarming figures, with a total of 84 deaths, 235 injuries, 215 accidents, and 165 cases of vehicle damage reported in the designated area. These numbers underscore the urgent need for effective measures to address the safety concerns and protect the lives of commuters.

The imposition of a 40 km/hour speed limit seeks to create a safer environment for all road users. By reducing the speed of heavy vehicles, the authorities aim to decrease the severity of accidents and provide drivers with a better chance to react to potential hazards on the road. This initiative will not only protect the lives of commuters but also contribute to the overall improvement of road safety on the Mumbai-Bangalore National Highway.
