Pune Police Crack Down on Social Media Rumour-Mongering, Book 34 Individuals

In response to the propagation of false information on social media platforms, Pune police have taken swift action, booking over 34 individuals across two separate FIRs. The accused are alleged to have spread rumours concerning an action taken by Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Sheikh Sallah Dargah.

The trustees of the Dargah, located at Kasba Peth, took matters into their own hands on Saturday, deciding to demolish unauthorized construction. As the situation unfolded, a large crowd gathered near the Dargah, and concerns of potential unrest prompted police intervention.

Two FIRs were filed against those found spreading rumours, with authorities identifying individuals likely to disrupt social harmony and public peace.

In the second FIR, Kondhwa police booked 13 individuals based on a complaint filed by Police Constable Subash Jarande. Senior Police Inspector Santosh Sonawane stated, “During the probe, it was found that some individuals were deliberately involved in spreading rumours related to Sheikh Sallah Dargah. We have initially identified them and registered a case against them under relevant sections.”

The Pune police, recognizing the gravity of the situation, deployed heavy security measures at Kasba Peth and urged responsible social media use. The individuals involved have been booked under sections of the law addressing the dissemination of false information and incitement to unrest.

The 14th-century shrine, known as Dhakta Shaikh Salla Dargah, holds historical significance in Pune. On February 22, PMC served a notice to the Dargah Trust regarding alleged encroachment, sparking tensions on Mahashivratri. Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar clarified that no anti-encroachment action was planned on that day, addressing the baseless rumours.

Cases have been registered at Faraskhana and Kondhwa police stations under IPC sections 143, 145, 149, 505, and 66, along with relevant sections of the Information Technology Act. Ongoing investigations aim to curb the spread of misinformation and maintain public order.
