Pune Police Commissioner Unveils Traffic Overhaul at SPPU Chowk: Experimental Measures from March 4

Pune In a proactive move to address traffic concerns at the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) Chowk, Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar conducted a comprehensive review of the traffic situation on February 29, 2024. Following the evaluation, the police commissioner announced experimental interventions set to be implemented from March 4, 2024, to test innovative solutions for managing traffic flow effectively.

According to the information shared on the official social media handle of Pune Police, the experimental interventions are as follows:

A. Traffic Diverted from Aundh/Baner:

  • Vehicles aiming for Senapati Bapat Road will not make a right turn at University Chowk. Instead, they will proceed straight to Cosmos Bank, take a U-turn, and then turn left onto Senapati Bapat Road.

B. Traffic Coming from Shivaji Nagar:

  • Vehicles heading towards Range Hills will go straight, take a U-turn at Cosmos Bank, and then turn left onto Range Hills Road.
  • Those going to Pashan will turn left onto Pashan Road.
  • Traffic bound for Baner cannot proceed straight; they must turn left onto Pashan Road and then right onto Abhimanshree Society Road, finally reaching Baner Road.
  • Access to Pune University will be restricted to the Millenium Gate, with no entry permitted through the Main Gate.

The Pune Police Commissioner also issued instructions to the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), and the Local Traffic Police Division:

  1. Barricades will be shifted inward to maximize carriage width.
  2. All slip roads will be smoothened for improved traffic flow.
  3. Fifty traffic personnel and fifty wardens will be deployed in two shifts to manage traffic effectively.
  4. The nearby petrol pump/CNG station is directed to prevent queuing on the carriageway.
  5. Heavy vehicles, except school buses and PMPML buses, are prohibited in the area.

In an additional note, the Commissioner hinted at an upcoming notification addressing the ban on heavy vehicles within the core area of Pune City.
