Pune: Now, poor will get free treatment in 10 more hospitals

Hospitals In Pune

PUNE: There were 56 hospitals under the Charity Commissioner’s office. However, according to the latest information collected by the Charity Commissioner’s office, the number of hospitals has increased by 10. Hence, the number of charity hospitals has gone up to 66. This will help poor patients in getting free treatment.

The Charity Commissioner’s office has a record of social service organisations, trusts and NGOs. Some organisations build hospitals for doing social work. Hospitals having an income of ₹5 lakh per annum are under the purview of the Charity Commissioner’s office. Some organisations built hospitals but they had not informed the Charity Commissioner’s office. The managements of these hospitals thought they didn’t have to inform them.

Since these hospitals are under the purview of the Charity Commissioner’s office, the IPF Scheme meant for poor patients started by the Bombay HC is applicable to them under section 41C of the Maharashtra Public Trustee Arrangements Act. Accordingly, they will have to spend two per cent of their total income on providing free and treatment at concessional rates to poor patients.

Ten per cent of beds of total beds are meant for economically weaker sections (those with an annual income of less than ₹3.60 lakh). They are given 50 per cent discount in the bill. Apart from this, 10 per cent beds are reserved for poorest of the poor (whose annual income is less than ₹1.8 lakh). It is compulsory to provide treatment to them free of cost.

Suddhirkumar Bukke, Joint Charity Commissioner, Pune said, “Ten more hospitals are included under the Charity Commissioner’s office. Discussions will be held with their trustees and they will be included in our list. Now, the rules of the Charity Commissioner’s office are applicable to them. This will enable poor people to get concessional and free treatment.”
