Pune: A new dean has been appointed at the BJ Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital within three weeks. The then Dean Dr Vinayak Kale was sent on compulsory leave in May this year. The additional charge was handed over to Dr Chandrakant Mhaske.
Now, Dr Mhaske has been stripped of the charge. It has now been given to Dr Eknath Pawar. This has exposed the chaos in medical education.
Two doctors from the Sassoon Hospital were arrested last month in the hit-and-run case for changing the blood samples of the minor boy involved in it. Dr Vinayak Kale was held responsible for not handling the case properly. And he was sent on compulsory leave.
The additional charge of the post was handed over to Dr Chandrakant Mhaske, Dean, Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Government Medical College, Baramati. He assumed office on May 30. However, his additional charge has now been withdrawn after three weeks.
It has now been given to Dr Eknath Pawar, Professor, Osteopathy Department, JJ Medical College, Mumbai. The change has been necessitated due to administrative reasons, stated the Medical Education Department.
However, frequent replacements of the dean has adversely affected the Sassoon Hospital administration. In the event of instability at the dean’s post, there has been no tabs on officials and employees of the hospital by any senior authority. As a result, patient services have been neglected.
Four deans in a year
Four deans were replaced at the Sassoon Hospital in the past one year. Dr Sanjeev Thakur was dismissed in the drug mafia Lalit Patil escape case last November. Dr Vinayak Kale was appointed the dean. He was sent on compulsory leave in May this year and Dr Chandrakant Mhaske was given the additional charge of the post. Now, Dr Eknath Shinde will take over charge.
