Pune, July 8th, 2023 – The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has commenced its efforts to demolish old and dilapidated wadas that pose a threat to the safety of residents. In the current year, the civic body has already demolished 34 such structures, with an additional 54 identified for imminent demolition. Through these actions, the PMC aims to ensure the well-being of citizens and prevent any mishaps caused by the collapse of unsafe buildings. By demolishing these structures, the PMC has acquired approximately 42,540 square feet of land.

As part of its annual pre-monsoon survey, the PMC assesses the condition of old wadas located within the city limits. Structures deemed hazardous to the residents or neighboring areas are subject to demolition, following a well-defined process. The objective is to mitigate the risk of these buildings collapsing during the monsoon season and causing harm to nearby residents.

To date, civic officials have surveyed 2,232 wadas situated primarily in the city’s peth areas. The ongoing survey is expected to identify an additional 268 wadas, bringing the total count to approximately 2,500 structures. This thorough assessment reflects the PMC’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of Pune’s citizens.

The PMC’s decision to demolish these dilapidated wadas is driven by the need to maintain the structural integrity of the city’s buildings and protect its inhabitants. Dilapidated structures pose a significant risk, especially during the monsoon season when heavy rains can further weaken the already compromised foundations. By proactively identifying and demolishing such buildings, the PMC aims to prevent potential accidents and ensure the safety of residents and passersby.
