Pune-Mumbai Expressway Upgrades: More Lanes to Tackle Traffic Woes

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Limited (MSRDC) has proposed an expansion of the Pune-Mumbai Expressway by adding two more lanes. Once the proposal is approved by the state government, construction work will commence, aiming to reduce traffic congestion on this vital route.

The Pune-Mumbai Expressway currently features six lanes, and the MSRDC intends to increase it to eight lanes to accommodate the growing number of vehicles that have used the route in recent years. The expansion project is expected to take around three years to complete after receiving government approval.

Commuters traveling between Pune and Mumbai have frequently experienced heavy traffic jams, particularly on weekends and holidays. Additionally, tourists visiting destinations like Lonavala during the monsoon season also contribute to the increased traffic flow on the expressway.

The expressway was inaugurated in 2002 to reduce travel time between Pune and Mumbai. However, the surge in vehicle numbers has prompted demands for additional lanes to alleviate traffic congestion. Furthermore, accidents on the expressway often lead to severe disruptions, with vehicles stranded for hours until accident sites are cleared and rescue teams arrive.
