Pune Monsoon Update: IMD Forecasts Arrival Within Days

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast predicting the imminent arrival of the monsoon in Pune, anticipated within the next three to four days. This development is expected to usher in thunderous weather patterns and rainfall patches until June 7, accompanied by a decline in daytime temperatures across the city.

Weather and Temperature Projections:

  • Rainfall and Thunderstorms: The IMD anticipates intermittent rainfall and thunderstorms until June 7, offering respite from the scorching heat.
  • Temperature Drop: Daytime temperatures are forecasted to range between 34 and 36 degrees Celsius, a slight decrease from the recent highs of 36.6°C recorded at both the Shivajinagar and Lohegaon observatories on Sunday.
  • Humidity Levels: Presently high humidity levels are causing discomfort during nights, but with the advent of rainfall and cooler temperatures, humidity is expected to diminish.

Expert Insights: Dr. Anupam Kashyapi, former head of the forecast division at IMD Pune, noted the timely progress of this year’s monsoon compared to the previous year’s delayed onset, which impacted agricultural activities.

A senior IMD official highlighted favorable conditions conducive to the southwest monsoon’s further advancement, with increased moisture levels and cloud formation over the state. The monsoon is anticipated to make its initial landfall in the coastal region of Konkan and subsequently envelop Maharashtra by June 6, a day earlier than usual.

Regional Impact and Agricultural Outlook: There are high probabilities of monsoon activity in Madhya Maharashtra, including Pune district, over the next two to three days. Farmers, preparing fields and securing seeds, await the timely rainfall crucial for Kharif season sowing. The onset of the monsoon holds significant importance, particularly in regions facing water shortages.
