Pune Metro stations are gearing up to reintroduce share-an-auto services, aiming to improve last-mile connectivity for commuters. The initiative comes after discussions organized by the Wake Up Punekar forum addressing issues concerning auto rickshaw services at Pimpri Chinchwad and Pune Metro stations.
Led by Mohan Joshi, the forum facilitated dialogues between autorickshaw union representatives and officials from the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro). Both parties expressed willingness to revive these services and ensure their sustained operation.
Mohan Joshi revealed that the decision to relaunch the share-an-auto program will commence with a few Metro stations in the initial phase. A survey to identify priority stations for implementation will kickstart next week.
Despite the Regional Transport Office (RTO) approving the share-an-auto service in August 2023 following the Metro’s expansion to over 20 stations, auto drivers’ response has been lukewarm, with minimal activity observed at Metro stations.
Efforts are underway to address this issue and alleviate commuter woes, as highlighted by Mohan Joshi. Auto union representatives raised concerns about inadequate space for rickshaws to halt at Metro stations, prompting further investigation by the forum. Regular meetings will be convened to monitor the authorities’ progress.
Moreover, auto union representatives expressed readiness to engage in discussions with the traffic department and RTO regarding share-an-auto services.
Assurances were provided by Maha Metro officials, pledging necessary assistance. They highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance last-mile connectivity, including the commencement of the Ramwadi Metro station shuttle bus service to the airport.
