Pune Metro Expansion: Second Phase Granted Approval, Rail Network to Expand by 82.5KM

Pune residents can look forward to a more seamless and efficient travel experience as the second phase of the Pune Metro project has received the much-anticipated approval. With the imminent completion of the first phase, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has given the go-ahead for the ambitious plans that promise enhanced connectivity and convenience.

The second phase of the Pune Metro is poised to significantly expand the metro network by an impressive 82.5 kilometers, creating vital links to various key destinations. This expansion envisions connecting Vanaz to Chandni Chowk, Ramwadi to Wagholi, SNDT to Warje, Hadapsar to Kharadi, Swargate to Hadapsar, and Khadakwasla to Swargate through the proposed HCMTR route.

The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Maha-Metro) has submitted an extensive detailed project report (DPR) to the PMC, outlining the entire plan along with the associated costs.

The Khadakwasla to Kharadi route via Swargate and Hadapsar (25.862 km) and the Paud Phata to Manikbaug route via Warje (6.118 km) are estimated to cost approximately Rs 9,074.24 crore. Maha-Metro plans to secure a loan of Rs 4,354.84 crore, with the remaining funds contributed by the Central government, the State government, and PMC.

Furthermore, the Vanaz to Chandni Chowk stretch (1.112 km) and the Ramwadi to Wagholi extension (11.633 km) are projected to require approximately Rs 3,609.27 crore. Maha-Metro intends to secure a loan of Rs 1,895 crore for these segments, with additional financial support from the Central government and the State government.

In this endeavor, PMC also plays a crucial role. They will allocate space for the metro at various locations, both temporarily and permanently, with an estimated value of Rs 6.77 crore.

What lies ahead? The next steps include awaiting approval from the state government and subsequent endorsement from the Central government. Upon successful completion of these pivotal stages, the actual implementation of the project will commence, bringing Pune one step closer to a more interconnected and efficient transportation system.
