Pune: Marathi culture showcased in England! 50 women from Maharashtra take part in saree walkathon

PUNE: Recently, a saree walkathon was held in London amid great enthusiasm. Fifty women from Maharashtra took part in the event. The women wore nine yard sarees and sported a nose ring and the local residents experienced the Maharashtrian culture.

The programme was organised by Dr Deepti Jain of ‘British Women in Saree’ and 600 women from India took part in the event. The women were wearing traditional clothes and gathered at the historic Trafalgar Square in London. The women from Maharashtra presented various songs including the traditional lavani. The walkathon began by chanting ‘Ganpati Bappa Morya.’

Anuja Hudke and Soniya Gokhale of Pune and Rama Karmokar and Kiran Chitale of Mumbai represented Maharashtra in the walkathon. The women displayed the handicraft of Maharashtra. The women who took part in the walkathon wore paithani sarees, Narayan Peth sarees, blouses, cosa silk, traditional ornaments, nine yard sarees and pheta (traditional headgear).
