Pune: Maharashtra leads in registration of students on ‘Academic Bank of Credit’; over 2 crore registrations done across India

Pune: The Academic Bank of Credit, developed under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, for saving credits of students has got the highest response from Maharashtra. As many as 186 institutions have registered on the website while over two crore students have registered their names on it.

The implementation of the NEP 2020 has started. The NEP 2020 is student-centric and makes the educational process flexible. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has developed the independent website, ‘The Academic Bank of Credit’, for saving credits of students. The UGC has directed all universities, colleges and higher education institutions in the country to register the names of their students on this website. Till date, over two crore students have been registered on it. As many as 1,605 universities and higher education institutions have been registered. Among them are 117 Central institutions, 335 autonomous colleges, 52 Central universities, 388 private universities, 384 state universities, 118 deemed universities, 1,189 institutions affiliated to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and 22 other institutions.

As per data displayed on the website, the highest number of institutions (186) are from Maharashtra, followed by Tamil Nadu (132), Andhra Pradesh (119), Madhya Pradesh (112), Uttar Pradesh (109) and Gujarat (106). Among the institutions in Maharashtra, the Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU) and the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) have taken the lead in registration. The YCMOU has registered 6,11,822 students, the SPPU has registered 5,47,237 students. The highest number of students 44,33,650 have been registered by Skill India Digital.

What is the Academic Bank of Credit?

The concept of the Academic Bank of Credit has been realised under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. All the credits earned by students during their academic career will be stored in the virtual bank. Even if students change their colleges, universities, their credits will be available permanently in the bank. This will smoothen the entire educational process.
