Pune Leads in JN.1 Cases: A Closer Look at Maharashtra’s Evolving COVID Landscape

Pune, 15th January 2024: In a surprising turn of events, Maharashtra recorded three COVID-19-related deaths within the last 24 hours, raising concerns as all victims had completed their vaccination regimen, according to the latest data released by the Public Health Department on Monday.

One of the victims, a 49-year-old patient from Pune, lost the battle to the virus on January 12 in a private hospital. The individual, who had been bravely fighting breast cancer, pneumonia, and septicemia, succumbed despite being fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Similarly, a 73-year-old patient from Thane, battling diabetes and high blood pressure, passed away on January 11 in a government hospital. The third fatality, a 59-year-old individual from Sangli, succumbed to the virus on January 13 in a government hospital. Notably, this patient had no pre-existing comorbidities. The disclosure was made by Dr. RB Pawar, the Joint Director of Health.

Pune remains a hotspot, with 150 patients infected with the JN.1 subtype—making it the most affected city in the state. Pune accounts for 60 percent of the total JN.1 patients, followed by Nagpur (30), Mumbai (22), and other cities. The rising numbers highlight the challenges posed by emerging virus strains.

In the latest 24-hour reporting period, the state registered 35 new COVID-19 cases, with 60 patients successfully recovering and being discharged from hospitals. The overall recovery rate stands at an impressive 98.17 percent, while the death rate is at 1.81 percent. A total of 2,382 tests were conducted in the state during this period, with a positivity rate of 1.46 percent, as confirmed by Dr. Pawar.
