Pune: Layers of foam float on Pavana river

PIMPRI: Layers of foam are floating on the Pavana river which supplies water to Pimpri Chinchwad and especially near Kejudevi barrage at Thergaon. However, the PCMC and MPCB have turned a blind eye to this problem.

Three rivers i.e. Pavana, Indrayani and Mula flow through Pimpri Chinchwad. The length of the Pavana river in the civic limits is 24.34 km and Indrayani’s total length is 20.85 km. Mula river flows from the limits of PCMC for 10 kilometres. Pollution has increased in the Indrayani river from Talavade to Charholi and Pavana river from Kiwale to Dapodi. Near the riverbed, pollution has increased in Kiwale, Punavale, Ravet, Tathwade, Walhekarwadi, Thergaon, Chinchwadgaon, Kalewadi, Pimpri, Dapodi, Pimple Gurav, Sangvi, Kasarwadi and Dapodi areas.

Foam is continuously seen on the surface of Pavana river. During the monsoon, this has happened three times. The civic administration said that people wash their clothes on the barrage and this creates foam.
Sanjay Kulkarni, Joint City Engineer, Environment Department, PCMC, said, “There is a possibility that some chemicals may have been released into some nalas by tankers in Aundh-Ravet areas.”
