Pune Lawyer’s ‘Climate Warrior’ Initiative Empowers Young Minds Across 80 Schools

Divya Chavan Jachak, a Pune-based lawyer, has made significant strides in the fight against climate change through her initiative, ‘Pune Climate Warrior.’ Over the course of a year, the initiative has spread its wings to encompass 80 schools, including those in Sangli, Nagpur, and Phaltan. Targeting students in grades six to nine, the program aims to instill climate consciousness in the younger generation, recognizing their potential as genuine change agents.

Jachak’s mother, Vandana Chavan, a Rajya Sabha MP, has been a steadfast supporter of her daughter’s mission, emphasizing the urgency of addressing climate change and reducing carbon footprints. The initiative adopts a comprehensive model based on sustainable development goals (SDGs) related to climate action, incorporating a theme-based monthly activity schedule.

Jachak underscores the crucial role of children as environmental stewards, stating, “By involving children, we not only impart environmental responsibility but also channel their curiosity and passion, forging a future where young minds drive innovation and sustainable solutions.”

The initiative has received a positive response, even in Zilla Parishad schools and rural areas, where awareness sessions have been conducted. A teacher training program witnessed participation from educators across different schools, incorporating engaging sessions with children and fostering a fun and activity-based learning environment.

Jachak reveals, “Educating these young minds is an investment in the future, as they will play a crucial role as guardians of tomorrow.” To culminate a year of experience, the ‘Youth Climate Summit’ is set to take place on January 27. During this event, students will present research-based measures applicable at both the city and state levels, engaging experts and government stakeholders in discussions to advocate for the implementation of these measures.

MP Vandana Chavan stresses the need to address climate change urgently, stating, “It’s time we wake up to address the issue of Climate Change – each one will have to strive to reduce their Carbon Footprint – there is no time to lose – we have no Planet B.”
