Pune Joins Statewide Initiative: Mass Vaccination Drive Against Japanese Encephalitis Expands to 19 Districts

In a significant development, Pune, along with Raigad and Parbhani, has been included in the state’s mass vaccination drive against Japanese Encephalitis (JE). The campaign, initially covering sixteen districts where JE is endemic, has expanded to include these three additional districts, bringing the total to 19.

The vaccination initiative, set to launch at the end of March, aims to vaccinate approximately 45 lakh children. The campaign will be carried out in both public and private schools, focusing on reaching a wide audience to enhance protection against the JE virus.

Japanese Encephalitis is a viral infection transmitted through the bite of a mosquito carrying the JE virus. While some individuals may experience symptoms such as fever, headache, and vomiting, a significant number may remain asymptomatic. In severe cases, the infection can lead to seizures, coma, and disorientation.

A senior official from the state family welfare department highlighted the importance of expanding the campaign to these additional districts. The target audience of 45 lakh students is expected to receive syringes and vaccines by the end of March, reinforcing efforts to prevent the spread of Japanese Encephalitis in the region.
