Pune Hospitality Industry Discontent with Police Orders: Calls for Reconsideration

The hospitality industry in Pune is expressing dissatisfaction with the recent police commissioner’s revised order extending the implementation of CrPC Section 144 on March 4. Restaurants and hoteliers in the city are voicing their concerns, stating that such orders, originally intended for emergency situations, are adversely affecting their businesses and causing unnecessary challenges.

Pradeep Shetty, President of the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Western India (HRAWI), criticized the extension, stating, “Orders under this section can’t be issued unless there is a serious emergency situation, such as during the pandemic, where hundreds are at risk. Doing so for restaurants is uncalled for.”

Members of HRAWI and the United Hospitality Association (UHA) expressed discontent with the recent police orders, emphasizing the impact on business during the ongoing exam season. Complaints include improper enforcement of the 1.30 am deadline, despite the commissioner’s order allowing restaurants to operate until that time.

Furthermore, restaurateurs raised concerns about the ban on all types of hookah, including herbal ones, despite the High Court’s approval of the latter. The ban, particularly in open restaurant areas, is viewed as illogical and detrimental to a significant source of revenue.

The latest order also introduces stricter regulations for ticketed day-to-day events at venues other than pubs, bars, and restaurants. The directive mandates written permission from the police commissioner’s office at least two weeks in advance, causing practical challenges for event organizers who finalize artists and DJs months in advance.

Pradeep Shetty appealed to the police commissioner, stating, “We request the CP to reconsider orders that cause harassment to restaurants and their patrons. We are also concerned about new rules/laws being enacted under such orders, undermining government initiatives for ‘ease of doing business.'”
