Pune Health Department Instructed to Establish Disease Outbreak War Room

Pune: Anticipating a potential rise in water-borne, vector-borne, and other diseases during the monsoon season, the health department in Pune has been directed to establish a dedicated “war room” to effectively manage and control disease outbreaks. In an online review meeting conducted by Health Minister Tanaji Sawant, plans for preventing and managing epidemics across the state were discussed, with a strong emphasis on proactive measures.

The review meeting, which took place on Tuesday, saw the participation of key officials, including Health Commissioner Dheeraj Kumar, Director of Health Services Nitin Ambadekar, civil surgeons, district health officers, and medical officers from municipal corporations.

Addressing the looming challenges posed by the monsoon season, Health Minister Tanaji Sawant stressed the importance of setting up local war rooms to deal with disease outbreaks. These local war rooms are expected to operate in conjunction with the state-level war room and function as central hubs for collecting and disseminating crucial information regarding disease occurrences and patient statistics. This proactive approach aims to enable timely and efficient disease management interventions.

In the event of vector-borne diseases, Health Minister Sawant outlined a comprehensive strategy for local bodies. Door-to-door visits are to be conducted to identify and eliminate mosquito breeding grounds. Concurrently, public awareness campaigns will educate residents on preventative measures against vector-borne diseases. A consistent and uninterrupted supply of essential medicines is also a priority, with regular checks on medicine stocks and planned replenishments to cater to demand.

Dr. Kailas Baviskar, Deputy Director of Health Services, outlined further steps to fortify disease control efforts. Local bodies have been tasked with rigorously testing drinking water sources to avert water-borne diseases. In cases where water samples indicate contamination, immediate preventive actions are to be undertaken. Increased blood sample collection for testing purposes, particularly for diseases like malaria, dengue, and chikungunya, is being emphasized. Vulnerable areas will undergo fumigation and insecticide spraying, creating a safer environment for residents.

Dr. Baviskar emphasized the need for vigilance within the health department and the robust implementation of disease control measures. The holistic approach adopted by the Pune health department, under the guidance of Health Minister Tanaji Sawant, underscores the commitment to proactive and effective disease prevention and management, safeguarding the health and well-being of the community during the monsoon and beyond.
