Pune Girl Meghna Sapkal Makes History, Becomes City’s First Woman Firefighter

Pune: In a groundbreaking moment for the city, Meghna Mahendra Sapkal has etched her name in history by becoming Pune’s first woman firefighter. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) fire brigade recently concluded its recruitment process, selecting 167 candidates, with Meghna Sapkal emerging as a trailblazer in a traditionally male-dominated field.

The PMC initiated the recruitment drive due to the increasing demand for firefighting personnel in light of Pune’s expanding population. Meghna Sapkal’s achievement not only signifies her personal triumph but also marks a pivotal moment in the city’s commitment to diversity and gender inclusivity within essential services.

Meghna Sapkal’s family has a longstanding tradition of service in the fire brigade. Her father, Mahendra, is currently employed in the fire brigade, and her retired grandfather, Sadashiv Bapurao Sapkal, also served with dedication. With multiple generations dedicated to public service, Meghna has taken a significant step by completing the mandatory firefighting course and joining the fire brigade.

Expressing her emotions, Meghna Sapkal highlighted the family legacy, saying, “Being a part of the fire brigade runs in the Sapkal family. My grandfather dedicated his career to the fire service, and now my father continues that tradition. I am thrilled to follow in their footsteps and join my father in this honorable profession.”

The Chief Officer of Pune Fire Brigade, Devendra Potfode, commended Meghna’s achievement and recognized the historical significance of her selection. He praised her dedication and expressed optimism about the positive impact her inclusion would have on promoting diversity within the firefighting community.

While Mumbai has seen women successfully joining the fire brigade, Pune’s move to recruit women personnel is a recent and commendable development. Meghna Sapkal’s selection marks a milestone in the city’s efforts to encourage more women to take up roles in essential services, aligning with the broader trend of promoting gender inclusivity across various fields.
