Pune Gears Up for Massive Survey as 2,500 PMC Employees Engage in Maratha Community Backwardness Assessment

In response to the persistent protests advocating for reservation within the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category, the Maharashtra State Backward Class Commission is set to embark on an extensive survey to gauge the backwardness of the Maratha community. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has already enlisted 1,500 employees for this monumental task, and with the scale of the survey encompassing around 12 lakh households, preparations are underway to appoint an additional 1,500 employees.

The Maratha community has been fervently demanding reservations, but the Maharashtra government has proposed a distinctive quota for them instead. The government has mandated the Maharashtra State Backward Classes Commission to conduct a thorough examination of the backwardness within the Maratha community, necessitating a comprehensive survey across the state.

In Pune city alone, the survey aims to cover a staggering 12 lakh households. To execute this ambitious plan, 1,500 employees have been appointed, with a supervisor designated for every 15 employees. Recognizing the enormity of the task, the PMC administration has initiated the process of appointing an additional 1,500 employees to ensure the survey’s efficient execution.

Chetna Kerure, Deputy Commissioner, affirmed, “A survey will be conducted in all the houses in the city to assess the backwardness of the Maratha community. Two and a half thousand employees are required for this purpose. Currently, 1,900 employees have been appointed in two phases, and the survey will commence upon the commission’s order.”

However, it has come to light that the initial list of appointed employees included the names of retired and deceased individuals. This inadvertent error occurred due to the Computer Department sending a two-month-old list. The administration has promptly rectified this mistake by removing the names of retired and deceased employees from the list. This correction ensures that the appointed employees actively participate in the survey, upholding its accuracy and reliability.
