Pune Election Department Collaborates with Celebrities to Encourage Voter Turnout

Decline in Voter Participation Spurs Innovative Measures

Pune, India – With the Lok Sabha elections witnessing a concerning decline in voter turnout during the initial phases, the Pune district election department has adopted a diverse strategy to bolster civic engagement. This approach includes leveraging the influence of Marathi and Hindi cinema personalities, prominent industrialists, and business magnates to encourage citizens to exercise their voting rights.

Here are the key initiatives undertaken by the election department:

  1. Engagement with Celebrities: Recognizing the significant impact of celebrities on public perception, the election department has enlisted the support of notable figures from the entertainment and business sectors to advocate for voter participation.
  2. Campaign in Residential Complexes: Over 39,000 housing societies in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporations, as well as nearby rural areas, are being targeted with an extensive awareness campaign to emphasize the importance of voting.
  3. Promotion at Voter Slip Distribution: Alongside the distribution of voter slips, citizens are being urged to exercise their franchise, reinforcing the message of civic responsibility.
  4. Enhanced Facilities at Polling Stations: To facilitate a smoother voting experience, polling stations will be equipped with essential amenities such as water, shelter, restrooms, and designated queues for women and senior citizens. Additionally, a separate counter will expedite the process of verifying names on electoral rolls.

According to Suhas Diwase, Pune district collector and chief election officer, engaging housing society office bearers to disseminate information about polling station facilities aims to remove logistical barriers and encourage greater participation.

Ajay More, additional collector and returning officer of Shirur Constituency, highlighted the comprehensive preparations in place, including the deployment of specialized personnel at various levels and the launch of a mobile app for polling station location and voter roll verification.

Similarly, Kavita Dwivedi, additional collector and returning officer of Baramati constituency, emphasized the establishment of special polling stations, including all-women booths and those managed by youth and physically challenged individuals, to foster inclusivity and enthusiasm among voters.

Despite concerns about the potential impact of a post-weekend polling day on voter turnout, Diwase reassured that proactive engagement with housing societies aims to maximize participation in the upcoming elections scheduled for May 13 in Pune, Maval, and Shirur constituencies.

In the spirit of democracy, citizens are urged to exercise their right to vote and contribute to shaping the future of their communities and the nation at large.
