Pune Division of Central Railway Achieves Impressive Earnings through Timely Condemnation and Scrap Sale of Coaches

Pune, 30th July 2023: Pune Division of Central Railway has been making significant strides in ensuring passenger safety and adhering to the Railway’s condemnation policy by scrapping coaches that have reached the end of their 25-year codal life. In a commendable effort, a total of 71 coaches have been condemned and subsequently sold for scrap, resulting in an impressive earning of Rs 10.35 crore from April 2022 to June 2023.

During the last financial year (2022-23), the division condemned 43 coaches, contributing significantly to a revenue of Rs. 5.36 crore through their scrap sale. Even in the recent three months alone, from April 2023 to June 2023, a total of 28 coaches were scrapped, fetching a revenue of Rs. 4.99 crore.

The decision to condemn a coach is based on an age-cum-condition basis, adhering to the codal life policy, with a maximum lifespan of 25 years. Prior to being attached to a train, every coach undergoes a detailed examination, ensuring that only safe coaches are put into service, along with regular annual overhauls.

“By promptly scrapping coaches that have reached the end of their useful life, the Pune Division of Central Railway not only guarantees passenger safety but also actively contributes to the Zero Scrap Mission,” officials of the Central Railway stated. This mission aims to minimize the accumulation of unused and obsolete materials, promoting a sustainable and efficient railway system.

The efforts of the Pune Division of Central Railway in managing condemned coaches and generating revenue through scrap sales showcase their commitment to safety and environmental consciousness. This proactive approach ensures that passengers can travel with confidence while being assured of the railway’s commitment to sustainability.
