Pune District to Get Cutting-Edge Police Dog Training Center: A Game Changer for Law Enforcement

In a significant move to bolster law enforcement capabilities, a state-of-the-art police dog training center is set to take shape in Pune district, Maharashtra. The decision, approved in a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, marks a crucial step in modernizing and expanding the existing facilities, recognizing the vital role police dogs play in maintaining security and public safety.

The Need for an Upgrade: The decision to establish this advanced training center stems from the pressing need to revamp the current dog training facilities in Pune. The existing center is not only in a state of disrepair but also lacks the necessary infrastructure for comprehensive training. Pune’s dog squad, comprising 350 dogs, plays diverse roles in crime detection, bomb detection, narcotics detection, guard duty, and patrol. With an additional 120 dogs in the BDDS squad, it’s clear that the demand for well-trained police dogs is substantial.

Enhanced Capacity: Presently, only 20 dogs and handlers can undergo training in Pune due to limited space and resources. The newly approved center is designed to address these constraints, with the capacity to simultaneously train 50 dogs. This expanded facility will play a pivotal role in ensuring a highly trained and efficient dog squad.

A Multi-Purpose Facility: Spanning across approximately 7 hectares, the new training center is not only set to enhance the training capabilities for the existing dog squad but also cater to the needs of other organizations. Departments such as the Forest Department, Excise Duty, Jails, and SDRF will have the opportunity to utilize this state-of-the-art facility for their respective dog training requirements, promoting collaboration and resource sharing.

A Holistic Approach to Canine Well-being: The proposed plans also include the establishment of a dog breeding center at the site, further emphasizing the government’s commitment to the welfare and efficiency of police dogs. To ensure the health and well-being of these invaluable canine assets, the government will appoint a Veterinary Officer and an Assistant Veterinary Officer.

Budget Allocation: The state cabinet has allocated a budget of Rs 56.76 crores for the development of this comprehensive dog training center. This substantial investment underscores the government’s dedication to providing the essential resources for the efficient training and utilization of police dogs in the region.
