Pune: Dhol Tasha Pathak Gears Up for Spectacular Ganeshotsav Celebrations

As the vibrant spirit of Ganeshotsav approaches, the city of Pune readies itself to embrace the traditional beats of ‘Dhol Tasha’ pathaks. Rooted deep within Indian musical and cultural heritage, the “Dhol Tasha” celebrations bring alive the rhythmic resonance of large drums (dhol) and cylindrical drums (Tasha).

This timeless tradition has the power to infuse fervor into various festivals, events, and processions across Maharashtra, uniting communities through the pulse-pounding rhythms that emanate from these instruments.

Eager participants from the Parshuram Dhol Pathak have immersed themselves in the art of playing dhols, tashas, and dhwajs (flags) in preparation for the upcoming celebrations. Amidst the festive atmosphere, enthusiasts come together to craft intricate beats and patterns, creating a mesmerizing spectacle both in terms of sound and sight. Beyond being a mere source of entertainment, the drumbeats hold immense cultural significance, binding participants and onlookers in a shared sense of pride, tradition, and togetherness.

Karan Vidhate, the co-founder of the Parshuram Dhol Pathak Trust, expressed, “With more than two decades of experience in playing the Tasha, our trust, established last year, has garnered a participation of over 500 members. We have been a part of numerous processions such as Bhausaheb Rangari Ganpati, Akhil Mandai Mandal, Mitra Mandal Chowk Ganpati, and have even ventured into places like Satara, Surat, Sangli, and Talegaon. Our entry fee remains modest at Rs 100.”

Co-founder Aniket Joshi further explained, “Drawing from my 18-year journey with the Dhol, we resonate through processions for Ganpati, Navratri, and Shiv Jayanti. Our practice sessions typically span from 7 pm to 9 pm. We have addressed concerns related to noise pollution, and the local residents have welcomed our presence. We have implemented compulsory I-cards and costumes for participants and welcome those aged 16 and above. Additionally, we ensure that we are equipped to provide first aid for any emergencies.”

Swaroop Kulkarni, a member of Parshuram Dhol Pathak since 2016, reflected, “Having transitioned from a 6-year Dhol player to volunteering within this Pathak, I have witnessed the journey of our group from 2016 to 2022. This year, I am making a return to playing the Dhol. The camaraderie and cooperation within our group are truly remarkable.”

Imraan Khan, another member, emphasized, “With a collection of 125 dhols, we place significant emphasis on maintaining their cleanliness and upkeep while providing proper guidance to the participants.”

Saras Shelke, a member of Parshuram Dhol Pathak and a student of SSRVM, shared, “In my first year as a dhol player, I have managed to effectively balance my school and studies alongside my dhol practice.”

As the beats of the dhols and tashas echo through the streets of Pune, the Parshuram Dhol Pathak exemplifies not only the rich musical heritage of Maharashtra but also the unity and harmony that cultural traditions can foster. The forthcoming Ganeshotsav celebrations are bound to be an enchanting display of tradition, rhythm, and community spirit.
