Pune Cracks Down: 26 Rooftop Hotels & Bars Receive Notices for Violations

The Pune district collector’s committee has taken stringent action against 26 illegal rooftop hotels and bars in the city, issuing notices for flouting norms and violating the law. This recent move by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is part of ongoing efforts to address the persistent issue of illegal structures that continue to operate despite previous actions taken against them.

Targeted Areas and Violations:

The identified rooftop hotels and bars are primarily located in key areas such as Keshavnagar, Lohegaon, Kharadi, Baner, Balewadi, Koregaon Park, and Mundhwa. While the names of the establishments were not disclosed, officials emphasized the prevalence of such unauthorized structures in these regions.

PMC’s Call for Stringent Measures:

Earlier this year, PMC Commissioner Vikram Kumar had urged district collector Rajesh Deshmukh to take decisive actions against unlicensed rooftop hotels. The commissioner proposed the revocation of liquor licenses for these establishments and mandated that bars and hotels obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the PMC.

In response to this call, a committee was formed, and from October 20 to November 16, notices were issued to the identified 26 rooftop hotels and bars.

Ongoing Struggle and Accountability Concerns:

PMC has been actively addressing the issue of illicit rooftop bars and hotels for the past year. However, a persistent challenge remains as these establishments often resume operations even after PMC interventions.

Additionally, concerns about accountability in case of mishaps or accidents at these rooftop venues have been raised. The city, along with the police and collector’s office, is collaboratively working on initiatives to collectively address and resolve issues related to rooftop hotels, ensuring public safety and adherence to regulations.
