Pune Court Sentences Man to Two Years in Jail for Assaulting Traffic Policeman

Pune, 1st July 2023: A sessions court in Pune has delivered its verdict, sentencing a man to two years of rigorous imprisonment for assaulting a traffic policeman at Gangadham Chowk. The accused, identified as Gafur Shahabuddin Sheikh, a resident of Gultekadi, was found guilty of manhandling policeman Anand Prakash Gaddure. The incident took place on March 29, 2014, around 7:30 am at Gangadham Chowk.

Policeman Gaddure was carrying out his duty of managing traffic flow at Gangadham Chowk when he encountered the accused rider who flagrantly disregarded the traffic signal not once, but on two separate occasions. Concerned about public safety and adherence to traffic rules, Gaddure approached the rider, seeking an explanation for his blatant violation. However, instead of offering any justification, the rider resorted to violence and physically attacked the policeman, tearing his uniform in the process. Fortunately, an eyewitness named Chetan Bhutada promptly alerted the police control room upon witnessing the distressing incident. The police responded swiftly, arriving at the scene and successfully apprehending the assailant.

Following the incident, an FIR was registered against the accused at the Market Yard Police Station. During the court proceedings, Chetan Bhutada’s testimony supported the account provided by policeman Gaddure, serving as crucial evidence in the case. Based on the presented evidence and witness testimony, the court convicted the accused and sentenced him to two years of rigorous imprisonment.
