In the aftermath of the attack on senior journalist Nikhil Wagle by alleged BJP workers in Pune, the Pune City Police has issued a comprehensive statement clarifying the circumstances leading to the incident and the subsequent actions taken by law enforcement.
The statement released by the Pune City Police sheds light on the sequence of events, beginning with Nikhil Wagle’s controversial post that reportedly contributed to a charged atmosphere in Pune. According to the police, officers visited Wagle at his place of stay upon his arrival in Pune, advising him not to proceed to the venue due to the heightened agitation in the area.
Despite the police’s counsel to wait until the process of detaining the agitators was complete, Wagle insisted on leaving for the venue. Approximately 25 agitators had been detained by 6 pm, with ongoing efforts to detain more.
The police further explained that Wagle, against their advice, left for the venue, evading the police by altering routes. Plainclothes officers were reportedly following his car to ensure his security.
During the attack on Wagle’s car, the statement highlights the presence of plainclothes policemen between the agitators and his vehicle. However, due to heavy traffic and bystanders, the police assert that using force or immediate evacuation was challenging.
To address the incident, the Pune City Police has registered an offence against the accused individuals under sections related to rioting, property damage, etc. The process of arrests has commenced, and the police assure that strong action will be taken against those involved in the attack.
