Pune Cantonment Board Grants Land for Pune-Nashik Railway Line Project

In a significant development, the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) has given the green light for the transfer of approximately 3.5 acres (equivalent to 13,000 square meters) of land to the Maharashtra Railway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (MahaRail). This allocation of land is intended to support the proposed Pune-Nashik semi-high-speed railway line project, aiming to enhance connectivity and transportation infrastructure in the region.

The land in question, which includes sections of A-1 defence land parcels, is currently under the possession of the PCB and the Dakshin Maharashtra and Goa Sub Area, which serves as the Local Military Authority (LMA). The approval by the PCB comes with a condition that MahaRail undertakes infrastructure work worth Rs34 crore within the cantonment areas.

MahaRail, a joint venture between the state government and the railway ministry, will be responsible for carrying out infrastructure projects in the designated area as part of the agreement. The specifics of these projects will be assessed and discussed by officials before being presented for necessary approvals.

An army officer commented, “The project for which the funds will be utilised in the LMA limits is under consideration.” This suggests that the allocation will be directed towards developments within the Local Military Authority boundaries.

At present, there is no direct rail link connecting Pune and Nashik. The proposed semi-high-speed railway line, spanning 235.15 km, will traverse through Pune, Ahmednagar, and Nashik districts, connecting industrial zones like Alandi, Chakan, Khed, Manchar, Narayangaon, Sinnar, and Satpur. The planned line encompasses 24 stations and is designed to support speeds of up to 200 km per hour.

MahaRail has been pursuing this land allocation since 2021 and has received the required permissions from the defence authorities. The value of the land in question is approximately Rs45 crore and will be used for constructing an elevated corridor, extending from Pune station to Manjari.

The decision to allocate this land presents a dual advantage. It not only furthers the railway project’s development but also aids in the completion of crucial pending infrastructure projects within the cantonment area. These projects include the finalization of a 10-storey parking facility and the construction of a commercial complex on fashion street market land. The revenue generated from these projects will contribute to the growth of the cantonment.

The state government’s commitment to offer generous compensation for land acquisition and construction indicates its dedication to driving infrastructure development and boosting connectivity in the region. This land allocation is a testament to collaborative efforts between various stakeholders to enhance transportation networks and overall development in the area.
