Pune, known for its recent bout of summer-like weather, is in for a surprise as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a significant temperature drop on February 21. The return of northern cool winds is anticipated to bring chilly weather to the city, with temperatures potentially falling below 10 degrees Celsius. However, meteorologists suggest that this could be the final noteworthy temperature drop for the season.
A senior IMD Pune official explained that various weather systems across the nation were influencing Maharashtra’s weather in recent weeks. These systems, including a trough line connecting the northeastern region, cyclonic circulations, and western disturbances, acted as a shield against chilly winds, resulting in milder cold conditions. Some parts of Vidarbha and Marathwada also experienced light rainfall during this period.
However, with clear skies prevailing, colder winds from the north are expected to blow into the state on February 21. This shift in weather patterns is likely to cause a temporary drop in temperature, with Pune experiencing a decrease of three to four degrees Celsius, reaching almost 10 degrees Celsius or slightly below. Meteorologists suggest that this might mark the final substantial temperature drop for the season.
Already, the minimum temperature in Pune has started to decline, with Shivajinagar recording a drop from 15.5 degrees Celsius on February 18 to 13 degrees on February 20. The highest temperature has also seen a slight decrease. Some areas in the district have already registered a minimum temperature of 10 degrees Celsius, with Haveli tehsil at 10.9 degrees Celsius, Shirur and NDA areas at 11.1 degrees Celsius, and the NDA area at 11.8 degrees Celsius.
