Pune and Hingoli Experience Significant Rain Deficit in Maharashtra

Pune, 11th July 2023: The delayed onset of the monsoon and lower-than-average rainfall have led to a significant rain deficit in Pune and several other parts of Maharashtra. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that Pune has recorded a rain deficit of 27% this year between June 1 and July 10.

IMD officials have stated that the Pune district received 209.6 mm of rainfall during this period, while the normal expected rainfall for the district was 286.4 mm. This shortfall in rainfall has raised concerns about the water supply, agriculture, and overall ecological balance in the region.

The situation is not unique to Pune, as many other districts in Maharashtra have also experienced high levels of rain deficit this year. Hingoli district has recorded the highest deficit in the state, with an 83% rain deficit. Sangli and Akola districts follow closely with rain deficits of 72% and 68% respectively.

While a few districts in Maharashtra have recorded surplus rainfall, the majority have suffered from deficits. Palghar district has experienced a surplus of 39% rainfall, while suburban Mumbai has seen a surplus of 24% and Thane has recorded a surplus of 20% rainfall.

The rainfall deficit in these districts has raised concerns about agricultural productivity, water availability for irrigation and drinking purposes, and the overall impact on the local ecosystem. The authorities are closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary measures to mitigate the effects of the rain deficit.

Efforts are being made to raise awareness among farmers about water conservation practices and alternative cropping techniques that can help cope with the rainfall deficit. The government is also implementing measures to ensure equitable distribution of available water resources and exploring options for water augmentation.

The IMD and other weather forecasting agencies are closely monitoring the weather patterns and providing regular updates to the concerned authorities. It is crucial for residents and farmers in the affected districts to stay informed about the changing weather conditions and adapt their activities accordingly.
