The Ministry of Defence has given its nod for the obstacle limitation surfaces (OLS) assessment at Pune International Airport, marking a significant step towards enhancing its operational capacity.
Background and Importance of OLS Assessment
The obstacle limitation surfaces (OLS) assessment is a crucial regulatory requirement that defines the airspace around aerodromes, ensuring it remains clear of obstacles. This clearance is essential to facilitate safe aeroplane operations, particularly crucial for accommodating larger aircraft suitable for international flights.
Minister of State for Civil Aviation’s Response
Murlidhar Mohol, city MP and Minister of State for Civil Aviation, expressed his appreciation for the Ministry of Defence’s swift approval of the OLS survey. He emphasized that this development brings Pune Airport closer to handling increased international traffic. Mohol highlighted the proactive role played by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in expediting the approval process.
Decision-Making Process
The decision to conduct the OLS survey was made during a meeting chaired by the Defence Secretary, attended by Pune’s Divisional Commissioner and representatives from the Airports Authority of India (AAI). The survey, entrusted to AAI, is expected to pave the way for the expansion of Pune Airport’s runway, enabling it to accommodate larger aircraft suitable for international travel.
