Pune Activist Advocates for Improved Road Infrastructure Post-Repairs

In response to ongoing road repair activities undertaken by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), local activist Qaneez Sukhrani has called for enhanced measures to ensure the quality and safety of road infrastructure across the city. Sukhrani’s advocacy emphasizes the importance of proper road leveling, installation of sturdy manhole covers, and effective tarring post-repairs to mitigate risks for motorists and pedestrians alike.

While acknowledging the PMC’s initiative to level manhole chambers, Sukhrani has voiced criticism over the execution of the work, citing instances where the uneven road surfaces pose significant hazards to commuters. In a written email addressed to the Chief Engineer of PMC’s Road Department, Sukhrani questioned the accountability of contractors and PMC staff in overseeing the maintenance work funded by public resources.

Expressing concern over the need for citizen intervention to address basic infrastructure deficiencies, Sukhrani underscored the PMC’s commitment to undertaking ward-wise tenders worth Rs. 10 crores for leveling manhole covers with road surfaces ahead of the monsoon season. However, Sukhrani questioned why additional supervision was not exercised during recent road layering activities to ensure alignment with manhole and chamber levels.

Sukhrani’s advocacy extends beyond email correspondence, with recent criticism directed at drainage work underway in the Kailash Supermarket Chowk area of Viman Nagar. Highlighting the closure of entire road sections due to drainage projects and the absence of adequate traffic management, Sukhrani calls attention to the need for comprehensive planning and execution of municipal projects to minimize disruptions and ensure public safety.

As Sukhrani continues to champion the cause of improved road infrastructure in Pune, her efforts underscore the importance of citizen engagement in holding authorities accountable and advocating for inclusive urban development initiatives.
