Preserving Rajgad: Velha Police Send a Strong Message to Illegal Vendors on Historic Fort

Pune : In a decisive move, Velha police conducted an operation on January 15 (Sunday) to remove illegal food vendors encroaching on Rajgad Fort. The crackdown, aimed at restoring order and preventing obstructions for tourists, resulted in the removal of six vendors and the initiation of legal proceedings.

Ranjeet Pathare, Assistant Police Inspector, Velha Police Station, shared insights on the operation, stating, “The operation to remove illegal food vendors commenced on Sunday from 9:30 am until evening on Rajgad Fort. Action has been taken against 6 food vendors under Section 283 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) as they were encroaching on space and obstructing tourists. Notices have been issued, and strict instructions given to prevent them from re-establishing their businesses in this area.”

Collaborating with the state archaeological department, Velha police conducted the raid, confiscating food, stoves, cooking gas cylinders, and other items from the illegal vendors. Notices were sent, informing them of the prohibition on cooking or selling food on the fort. The officials highlighted the environmental impact, pointing out the littered area, including non-biodegradable items.

Rajgad Fort holds historical significance as the birthplace and final resting place of Rajaram I, the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who also ruled from the fort. Situated approximately 4,514 feet above sea level, the fort attracts a significant number of hikers and tourists, particularly on weekends.
