Poona Club Commemorates 25 Years of Scrabble with Exciting Tournament

Poona Club recently celebrated the Silver Jubilee of Scrabble with a thrilling three-day tournament held on July 7th, 8th, and 9th. The game was first introduced to the club back in 1998, and this special event marked 25 years of Scrabble at Poona Club.

The tournament took place at Cinema Hall, Poona Club, and saw participants from across the country showcasing their skills and competing for the top spot. Mumbai’s Sherwin Rodrigues emerged as the ultimate winner, securing an impressive 19 victories throughout the tournament. His outstanding performance earned him the title and solidified his position at the top of the leaderboard. Rodrigues’ exceptional gameplay left no chance for any other player to overtake him, a feat known as being “gibsonised.”

One of the noteworthy aspects of this year’s tournament was the introduction of live streaming. Viewers from all around the world had the opportunity to watch the games unfold on Table 1 of Group A. This added a new level of excitement and engagement to the event, allowing Scrabble enthusiasts to follow the matches remotely.

A total of 44 players participated in the tournament, with participants divided into two groups: Group A and Group B. Group A consisted of players with a National rating above 1100, while Group B included players with a rating below 1100. In Group A, Sherwin Rodrigues secured the first-place position with an impressive 19 victories. Udayan Grover from Pune and Ishika Shivlinghai from Bengaluru secured the second and third positions, respectively. In Group B, Ms. Nalini from Bengaluru emerged as the winner.

The winners were honored with trophies, and the prizes were presented by Mr. Ashok Bhandarkar, the Tournament Director, and Neena Shahani, a member of the Pune Scrabble community.

The Poona Club Scrabble tournament not only celebrated the game’s Silver Jubilee but also showcased the immense talent and passion for Scrabble within the community. The event provided a platform for players to demonstrate their skills, compete against one another, and further enrich their love for the game.
