Police Urgently Demand Decongestion of Pune’s Fashion Street Amidst Safety Concerns

In a bid to avert potential disasters, the Cantonment police have issued a letter urging the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) to take immediate action in decongesting Fashion Street in Camp. This popular shopping destination, infamous for a significant fire incident on March 27, 2021, is currently densely packed with patrons and vendors, posing risks of fire, stampede, and criminal activities.

Fashion Street, spanning two acres and established in 1997, was initially designed to accommodate 448 shops, each measuring 4 by 5 meters. However, over time, unauthorized retailers have encroached upon designated spaces, leading to nearly a thousand stores in the market today. The congestion has escalated, particularly during weekends and festivals, raising concerns about the safety and well-being of visitors and shopkeepers alike.

The police officials highlight the urgency of decongestion to mitigate potential risks, including fire hazards and stampedes, especially given the narrow alleys and the division of leased shops, reducing escape routes in emergencies. The police have emphasized the need for swift action, underlining the danger posed by the present overcrowded state of Fashion Street.

Activists argue that the proliferation of settlements could have been prevented if authorities had taken prompt action against violators. The market, entangled in legal issues, now faces increased dangers, with numerous unlicensed operators holding criminal histories and operating without regard for safety protocols.

Responding to the police’s recommendations, a senior PCB official stated that they would take necessary action but provided no specific timeline or plan. The official acknowledged the need to address the overcrowding issue and ensure the safety of all stakeholders in Fashion Street.

However, it was revealed that PCB is currently embroiled in legal battles defending Fashion Street. The board, unable to control the massive fire that occurred in March 2021, faces challenges in generating market revenue. Despite the prime location and the land’s substantial value, the potential for lucrative projects remains untapped.
