Special Operation Targets Traffic Violations Amid Festive Revelry
In a bid to enhance road safety during the Holi festivities, law enforcement agencies in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad conducted a targeted operation against drunk driving and traffic infractions. The crackdown resulted in the arrest of 280 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol, alongside charges against 1,656 others for various traffic offences.
Commissioners Amitesh Kumar and Vinoykumar Choubey spearheaded the initiative, deploying specially trained personnel equipped with breath analyzers across key traffic divisions. The operation, notably intensified on Dhulivandan, aimed to deter reckless driving commonly associated with celebratory occasions.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Vishal Gaikwad of Pimpri Chinchwad police highlighted the dual focus of the drive, stating, “We conducted two separate special drives targeting drunk driving and other traffic violations, including riding triple seats.” Gaikwad revealed that 138 individuals were booked for drunk driving, with an additional 497 violations recorded.
Echoing these sentiments, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Rohidas Pawar of Pune elaborated, “We booked 142 individuals for drunk driving, 226 for riding triple seat, and 933 for other traffic violations.” Pawar emphasized the continuation of the enforcement drive in the days ahead to maintain road safety standards.
Offenders found exceeding permissible blood alcohol limits, detected through breath analyzers, face prosecution under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicle Act. The crackdown aims to promote responsible driving behavior and curb road accidents during festive seasons, ensuring safer roads for all.
