PMPML’s Vision: 400 New Buses to Redefine Pune’s Public Transportation Landscape

In a strategic move to meet the escalating transportation demands of Pune, the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has given the green light to acquire 100 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses, along with leasing an additional 300 buses. This decision, made during a recent board of directors meeting, is part of PMPML’s broader strategy to strengthen its fleet and elevate passenger services.

The comprehensive plan includes the introduction of 300 CNG buses and 100 electric buses, all measuring 12 meters in length. This initiative responds to the existing shortage of buses in comparison to the growing number of passengers, necessitating the addition of new vehicles for the effective operation of PMPML services.

The tender process for the acquisition and leasing of these buses is set to commence this week, signifying a significant stride in PMPML’s modernization efforts. While the deployment of CNG buses is expected within three months, the rollout of electric buses may encounter some delays.

Nitin Narvekar, Joint Managing Director of PMPML, highlighted the emphasis on CNG due to its lower operational costs compared to electric vehicles. Presently, PMPML operates 981 buses, with an additional 1,098 buses provided by seven contractors.

With the introduction of 400 new buses, comprising 300 CNG and 100 electric buses, PMPML aims to markedly enhance its services, catering to the needs of approximately two lakh passengers daily. Each CNG bus is anticipated to transport an average of 730 passengers per day, significantly increasing passenger capacity.
