PMPML Struggles: Over 1,200 Bus Trips Cancelled in March

Passengers Face Hardships as Public Transport Services Decline

The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) continues to face criticism as it cancels over 1,200 bus trips in March, exacerbating the woes of commuters already grappling with reduced frequency and deteriorating services.

Throughout January to March this year, a staggering 3,376 trips were cancelled due to the utility’s inability to maintain its fleet, affecting around 44.77 crore citizens who rely on PMPML buses for their daily commute. The situation worsened in February when hundreds of buses were discarded due to wear and tear.

Despite scheduling 20,215 trips per day, PMPML now struggles to complete even 19,300 trips daily, marking a significant decrease in bus movement compared to previous years. This decline in service quality is evident as commuters are forced to endure longer waiting times, with some routes experiencing delays of up to 40 to 45 minutes.

Rohan Kamble, a regular commuter from Katraj, expressed frustration, stating, “The reduction in bus frequency has made it difficult for commuters, especially during the summer. Dilapidated bus stops exacerbate the situation, demanding immediate repairs.”

Echoing similar sentiments, Sahil Shaikh, a student reliant on public transport, emphasized the need for urgent intervention. “As a student, timely commute is crucial for me. However, the declining number of bus trips has made it challenging. Authorities must prioritize upgrading public transport services,” said Sahil.

Sanjay Kolte, the chairman and managing director of PMPML, acknowledged the issues and outlined plans to address them. “We are redirecting buses to routes with heavy traffic and are in the process of purchasing new buses. Despite the poor response to the initial tender, we aim to procure 200 new buses by June,” assured Kolte.
